Sun-Mi Hong
South Korean drummer Sun-Mi Hong began playing drums at the age of 17, and by 19 she was studying at Howon University. She later moved to Amsterdam to study at the Conservatorium. The transition to Europe completely changed her perspective on life and music. Thanks in part to mentors and drummers such as Martijn Vink and Marcel Serierse, she developed a growing interest in jazz. She listened to artists like Brian Blade, Ari Hoenig, and Roy Haynes, and began working intensively on her own compositions. In 2017, she released her debut album, and in 2018 she won the Sena Dutch Jazz Competition with her group, leading to her debut performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
Sun-Mi Hong was named a Young VIP in 2019. As part of this honor, she toured the Netherlands in 2019 with the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet, performing at numerous venues and festivals.
“Sun-Mi is a fantastic musician who not only plays drums incredibly well, but is also very enterprising, takes initiative, and is open to all kinds of musical styles. I really enjoy playing with her because she encourages me to explore new repertoire and to push my own boundaries.” – Benjamin Herman
