Kika Sprangers
Saxophonist Kika Sprangers (1994) graduated last year from the Utrecht Conservatory with top honors — a 9 with distinction — where she studied under Marc Scholten and Toon Roos. Since then, she has been making impressive strides: she presented her Large Ensemble in a sold-out Cloud Nine at TivoliVredenburg, and in February she released her debut EP Leaves of Lily.
On both alto and soprano saxophone, Sprangers effortlessly alternates between delicate whisper tones and smooth, lyrical jazz lines, while her tightly grooving band blends acoustic and electronic sounds with elegance. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of styles, she cites artists such as Seamus Blake, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, and Maria Schneider. In recent years, she toured across the Netherlands as lead saxophonist of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, with which she also collaborated with the Metropole Orkest. A remarkable saxophonist, bandleader, and composer in the making!
