Miguel Rodriguez

Miguel Rodríguez was born in 1983 in Madrid, but after studying at the Rotterdam and Amsterdam conservatories, he decided to stay in the Netherlands. His Spanish roots clearly come through in his own brand of ‘jazz.’ Madrid is a multicultural city full of various types of music, which influences his compositions — a mix of improvisation, flamenco, and Latin styles. This multiculturalism is also reflected in his band’s lineup: alongside himself on piano, the band includes Luciano Poli (double bass) and Francesco de Rubeis (drums) from Italy, and Miguel Hiroshi (percussion) and Maria Marin (flamenco vocals) from Spain.

In addition to his own music, with which he performed last year at Het Concertgebouw, Miguel Rodríguez is part of the Benjamin Herman quartet, the Ben van Den Dunger quartet, and the Maarten Hogenhuis quartet. He has toured, among other places, Thailand with Deborah Brown and the Beets Brothers, and Japan with the Genzo Okabe quartet.

Tokyojazznotes: “A confident debut from a musician with his own clear sound, Miguel Rodriguez is well worth checking out.”
