Kapok

Kapok does not follow well-trodden paths. With an unusual lineup, Morris Kliphuis (horn), Timon Koomen (guitar), and Remco Menting (percussion) explore new sounds and rhythms. Kapok loves freedom, wildness, and adventure. There is ample space for improvisation, and a piece performed live can take on a completely different interpretation than anyone expected. In 2012, Kapok won the prestigious ‘Best Group’ award at the Dutch Jazz Competition.   The jury, consisting of saxophonist Sjoerd Dijkhuizen, trumpeter Jan van Duikeren, and Volkskrant jazz journalist Tim Sprangers, was unanimous in their verdict on the winner: “Kapok excels in originality and inventive interplay, playing raw and spontaneous. With an overwhelmingly rich and vivid set, Kapok creates an incredible tension.”

With their debut album Flatlands, recorded at the Kytopia studio in Utrecht, Kapok toured no fewer than 53 venues across the Netherlands in 2012.

The press on Kapok’s debut album:
“A jazz record with light, space, and imagination (…) Kapok is a special fusion of instruments” – NRC
“Disturbingly good (…) a peculiar synergy that effortlessly commands the attention of the adventurous listener. An absolute recommendation” – Jazzenzo.
